Series #12: Nerdette Daily: Television

June 29, 2015

Hi Gang!

I've got a whole bunch of stuff going on behind the scenes at the moment that I can't talk about but I decided that I would pop off a quick blog post before getting back to work. So here is what I'm currently watching on TV (internet, I don't actually have cable or even the regular channels, so everything I watch is streaming.)

Adventure Time: Alex and I watched the first two season on Netflix, but had issues finding the rest, until I realized that HuluPlus had it, so I got a subscription. We're zooming through Season 3 and on our way to Season 4, I love when the episodes take a more intimate peek into certain characters lives. I love the episodes with Marceline the best, and even though I have only seen one Fiona and Cake episode, I am hoping there are soo much more in the future, (Plus, I think I have a crush on Prince Gumball)

Sleepy Hollow: I watched the pilot, when it first came out, but it's overlooking of very very simple occult lore, annoyed me the first time around. The second time I watched it I was just as annoyed, but thanks to +Jamie Broadnax and her Twitter Time Line, she keeps making me think that maybe I should give it another try.

Say I love you: The art reminds me of My Little Monster, which I really REALLY liked, and I know it's romantically inclined, so I don't have to wait for Alex to watch it, he won't be interested. I really missed watching Anime, when I was in College, I actually used to finish entire series, and then move on to something new, but now, with the blog picking up and baking and my job, I just dont have the time to bingewatch like I used to. This will also be the first anime I've continued to watch after not liking any of the themes.

Pretty Little Liars: What I originally got Hulu Plus for, I had just finished Season 5 on Netflix, and I was so floored by the season Finale, I had to know more, and then I realized that there were episodes on Huluplus and they update every tuesday, welp, that's where I've been for the last couple of nights.

What shows have you been watching lately? I love talking about TV, just make sure you add #nerdetteatlarge to it, so I can find it on Twitter!

Haul: Books, Gauges and Totoro!

June 24, 2015

Hi Gang!

So it's been quite a while since I did a haul post! This weekend I got some shopping done and I can't wait to show you what I got, so lets just jump right in!

I hit the library the other day, because I wanted to have lots of things to read during the weekend, because all it was supposed to do was rain, and I knew I wouldn't be able to go to the flea. I got: knitting Vintage, The Portable Dorothy Parker, The Tempest, The Tent, I want you to Shut the Fuck up, Canon EOS 70D for Dummies, Falling for Hamlet, The Bunnicula Collection ( False advertising, it only has 1-3) and Batman No Man's Land, on AUDIO! It is SOOOO GOOD! It's literally as if a comic book came to life.
I was also able to stop by Spencers and Hot Topic, after breakfast with Alex's father. I got earrings, finally able to move up in size. A bamboo hat (I wanted a hat that wasn't a snapback) a peterpan makeup bag (I'll be using it for earrings) three pairs of socks, GiGi, Totoro and Mice and Men. (Which now that I'm looking much closer look like marijuana leaves. :( Not my kind of thing.) They were having a huge buy one get one 50% off in the entire store, so of course I had to grab some t-shirts! I picked up Sailor Moon and Baymax. I love the Baymax one because it looks like blue prints for his flying suit.
I had so much fun on Father's Day and I was so excited to give my father his gift! If you follow me on Instagram and Twitter you'll see the envelope, because I honestly couldn't wait. The day's start gave me a huge headache, but once it was gone around 3:30 ish, (My headaches are AWFUL) I watched Alex and Gi kill zombies in Resident Evil 5, (I deserve a prize, I stopped into Gamestop, and DIDN'T buy anything!) My grandfather fell asleep on the couch. We had delicious homemade meatloaf, buttered potatoes, greens, cornbread and brownies, the food put gramps out!

If you keep scrolling you will see something amazing attached to this post!

Yes, Youtube is alive and well with the sound of my voice! If you guys subscribe to my channel you will be so far ahead of all the other social media I frequent. My videos are only about 5-10 minutes, even after editing, so it makes it super simple for me to just pop onto youtube and upload it, so you'll know everything in my haul before this post goes live! So Subscribe to make sure you don't miss out on everything!

Gamer Famelle: Gladys of Usagi In Wonderland

June 22, 2015

Hi Gang!
We're starting this week off with a bang! I was able to interview Gladys of Usagi in Wonderland over the weekend. Make sure you guys go give her lots of love on her blog and twitter! Read on for awesomeness.

Playstation or Xbox and why?
I lean a lot toward the Playstation. I had a PlayStation 1 and when the Xbox came out, it didn't grab me like the PS platforms did and as they came out with systems and most the gamers were available on both, I just kept going with the PS. I still own my 360 but never upgraded, I finally broke down and got myself the PS4.

Name your top 5 games.
 Animal Crossing (Any of them)
 Duck Hunt
 Marvel V. Capcom 3
 Resident Evil: Code Veronica
 Mickey Mousecapades

If you would be any character who would you choose and why?
Lara Croft. She gets to go on all these crazy adventures and discover things.

If you had to live in a game's environment, which would you choose?
Animal Crossing!! I get to run my own town, decorate my home, fish, catch bugs, plant flowers, hang out on an island.

Are you a fan of Pokemon? If so, what are a couple of your favorites?
I am, but I only know the first 150. Mew is my favorite of all time.

Do you have any limited editions of Consoles?
Pikachu Nintendo 64, Hello Kitty Dreamcast, NES Controller Gameboy SP, a Puple PSP, the 20th anniversary PlayStation 4.

Are there any games that are popular overseas, that you wish would be brought to the states?
As of right now, I don't know of any, but I am a fan of the rhythm games that require you to have something. I have a game on my PS2 that uses a tambourine. It's a rhythm game with songs from a famous girl band. I have the pad for Pop n Music for my PS2, they are all imported.

Is there any game-related memorabilia you cherish?
My Hello Kitty Dreamcast, I think I am one of the few that love the Dreamcase and to own a Hello Kitty version is really cool.

You aren't the only one, I was so in love with my Dreamcast that when it stopped working, we bought three more before giving up. I was ecstatic when I found Jet Set Radio in the Playstation Store.

Do you get a lot if any flack for being a female gamer?
I've been lucky not to have any kind of flack. I only game with friends online, otherwise I play alone or Co-op with the Boyfriend.

If someone was new to gaming, and you wanted to get them hooked, which game would you suggest they play?
I'd take it old school and get my Nintendo out and have them play Super Mario Bros with me. Sometimes, I'll recommend Disney Infinity. I try to start them off slow but I have made the mistake of saying GET RESIDENT EVIL PLAY IT NOW, and then they don't ever ask again.

What would you tell parents, who don't let their children play video games?
I think gaming is fun for all ages and with kids, let them do it in doses or as an reward. My stepdaughter games with us and sometimes on her own. She isn't glued to the TV playing hours on end, even though sometimes we do get stuck playing LEGO Batman 3 for five hours, and then "oops, it's bed time." A lot of games are really great for creativity like Disney Infinity. We get the chance to build levels/worlds and she has a blast with it. I call her a game designer and that could be something she may do in her life.

If you were going to get a gaming tattoo, what would get  and what's it's significance to you?
I have one! It's Bullet Bill from Super Mario. I love the Mario games it was the NES that got me into video games. Boo's my favorite character but white doesn't work on my skin, so I went to the next best thing.

Do you enjoy games, even when there aren't any playable female characters?
I do, but I really wish there were more games with lead female characters.

What are some up and coming games that you are looking forward to?
Assassin's Creed because of Evie Frye. Star Fox Zero. Animal Crossings: Happy Home and Amiibo Festival. DOOM. Fallout 4. Disney Infinity 3.0. Star Wars BattleFront. LEGO Marvel's Avengers and LEGO Dimensions.

Make sure you guys go give her lots of love! If you have any questions for her leave on the twitter!

Handheld Mistress #33: Keroppi Causes Chain Reactions

June 19, 2015

Hi Gang!
Thanks to folks going on vacation at work, I was unfortunately round up in a whole slew of extra shifts that took away from my blogging opportunities. Fortunately, I picked up a new blog planner over the weekend, and hopefully, I'll be able to stay more organized in the future. I got the urge a couple days ago to play Professor Layton V.S. Ace Attorney again. I stopped a while back because of course with my luck, I got super excited about saving Espella from being convicted as a witch, and wound up hitting the cartridge which released the game from the system, and of course not saving all of my extremely hard work. I was incredibly depressed, I hadn't touched the game since. I have also been exploring some of the games in my Mame Emulator, and came across a Keroppi game in Japanese, which is fine, because it isn't especially difficult, there are three levels. Level One: Hop around like the frog that you are and capture Candy falling from the Ceiling. Level Two: Jump over beach balls and barrels within 30 seconds as you travel down a grassy knoll on your way home. Level Three: Play open the treasure chest, and hope that there is loot inside.
I also came across Magical Drop, the original. The one that I'm addicted too and have completed is Magical Drop Three, I had Magical Drop Two on my old cellphone, and now I have an emulator version of the original, which was called Chemical Reaction here in the states. The game play is the same albeit MUCH slower than the newer versions. I posted a photo on Instagram and a lot of people thought it was Bust-a-Move. Although, the game looks and type are similar, the actual mechanics are completely different. In Bust-A-Move, you have a creature holding a bow and arrow of sorts that
shoot a ball forward, you want this ball to attach to balls that match the original color so they explode, you continue until you clear the board. In Magical Drop, you have a jester who captures a marble or group of marbles of the same color from a column and moves it to another column to explode. This mechanism actually makes the game extremely easy and enjoyable, because if there is something in your way, you can simply move it to the other side and continue winning the game.
I also got to play a decent amount of Ultra Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter X Tekken. It had been quite some time since I was able to relax and relish a couple of rounds of  one of my favorite arcade fighters with one of my absolute favorite rivals, my father. He and I get so dramatic when we play each other. I'll have to have Alex video record one of our battles. We jump around, talk mass shit and gloat ridiculously when we win.

What have you guys been playing lately? Lets talk about it on Twitter!!! Hashtag #nerdetteatlarge !!

Handheld Mistress #32: Nintendo + Square Enix walk into a bar...

June 17, 2015

Hi Gang!
I was able to catch Nintendo's Digital Event and Square Enix's Conference yesterday afternoon, and I have lots of feeling about it so I'm gonna write about it! It's all over Twitter and if you guys wanna strike up conversation Please DO! I love talking to people about things, especially video games, and I'd love to hear what you guys have to say! Make sure that if you hit me up on twitter you use #nerdetteatlarge !

- I could not be more excited for #Yoshi Woolly World! As a knitter and a gamer, I am so in love with the fact that knitting has come so far in mainstream media. There are sections of levels that can be "frogged" and result in large wound balls of yarn following your character. Walls of knitting are being held up by two knitting needles, I will buy a Wii U just for this game. There are also the options to be yarned versions of other nintendo characters such as Mario! Creating more reasons for me to gather a few amiibo's.

- I squealed soo loudly when I saw Level 5 but alas it is not another Professor Layton, it is called Yokai Watch, and it has an air of Pokemon and Yugioh to it. I don't know much but I can agree with everyone else that the characters are super adorable and I hope to learn more about it in the future.

- I absolutely love the adorable intro to Nintendo's Digital Event, three major players of Nintendo transforming into characters of StarFox, to burst right into Star Fox Zero for the WiiU! I've never played Star Fox, but it was definitely a favorite to a lot of people and the Tree House Live allows you to see game play!

- I can't believe its the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Brothers, Nintendo didn't disappoint, Super Mario Maker, with levels that not only you create but can then share globally? Mario Tennis and Mario Luigi Paper Jam, we were thoroughly marioed in, this event! I'm actually really excited about Mario Luigi Paper Jam, to bring two worlds together like that, just looks amazing!

- I started watching Square Enix's Live Conference to hope for bits and pieces of Kingdom Hearts 3, but it was not the adorableness I was expecting especially after spending an entire hour with Nintendo's Puppets!

- I have tried #Zelda twice. The first time was for the Game Boy Color, Then the 3DS, both did not bode well, but with the announcement of Zelda: Triforce Heroes, third times the charm, the ability for multi-player AND co-op and the adorable Totem powers, you need to rely on the different options to complete a level or even the game, it makes me itch to try again.

- I really wanted to learn more about the Japanese Dance/Music game that they Showed, but I only gathered FE and a release date of 2016, I'm hoping that there will be more information soon!

- Between +Mia Moore and the online conference, I am building up the urge to give Animal Crossing another chance. They introduced Happy Home and its seems to carry on the adorableness factor that people have come to know and love.

- I am interested in learning more about the new project from Nier for the PS4 that Square Enix showed in the beginning of their conference, which started a minute after Nintendo's, no time for breating at E3! The 3 seconds of the beautiful graphics was enough for me to look for the original one from 5 years ago to see what it's about.

- They are going to remake Final Fantasy 7, a pc version will be available for IOS and Android. The adorable chibi Version World of Final Fantasy available for PS4 and PSVITA (I wanna get it) seemed super adorable and renewed my faith in Final Fantasy, I really wanna try it out. They also revealed Kingdom Hearts Unchained Key for Cell Phones, I was not a fan at first because I thought it was the only Kingdom Hearts I was going to see, but now that I know Kingdom Hearts 3 is alive and well, I'm willing to give it another chance.

What new titles got you excited? Lets talk about it! Hit me up on twitter, or leave a comment below!

5 Fandom Friday: Favorite Fictional Fathers

June 15, 2015

Hi Gang!
In honor of Father's Day, I thought I would talk about my favorite fictional Fathers. My family and I are really close, and I enjoy spending time with my dad a lot, so this topic is right on the money. Lets get started.

- The Muffin King: Better known as Dad from Dexter's Lab. He was equally loving and clueless when it came to his children's behavior. He was one of the first fictional dads I actually came across, who I liked, and the way he fought those chipmunks for his wife's muffins, was one of my favorite episodes.

- Wayne Fields: Emily Field's father from Pretty Little Liars, the candidates for great dads is SEVERELY lacking in this television Show. Both Aria, and Spencer's father's Cheated on their Spouses, and Hanna's just left them in the Dust. When Emily came out, he was the first one to say hey, it's ok. If that's how you feel, then I'm down. When he isn't out and about protecting "american liberties" he's right at home, for dinner, Christmas or each other.

- Ryoki Fujioka: Haruhi's Father from Ouran High School Host Club, is definitely one of my favorite fictional fathers of all time. His over abundance of Love and Care that he has for Haruhi is something that a lot of fathers, fictional or otherwise should look up too. Sure he's a little unconventional but that doesn't mean he doesn't have the necessary attributes to be a proper father.

- Jim Gordon: Although, he didn't have the common sense to get out of Gotham while he could, or after several incredibly terrible things happened to his family. He is still an upstanding father figure not only to his police force but also to his daughter, Barbara Gordon, who goes on to become Batgirl and her final form, Oracle.

- Arthur Weasley: Latest and greatest. I feel like he literally is the epitome of a perfect fictional father figure. Not only was he able to take care of his family, but he had enough love and space in his heart to adopt Hermione, Harry and the others in his department. I love the admiration he shares for his wife Molly and the love he dotes on his children.

I know I'm a couple of days late, but unfortunately, my work schedule is not being very conducive to blogging. Luckily, this week things will be back to normal!

Gamer Famelle: Mia of XOMIA!

June 8, 2015

Hi Gang!
Oh my gosh you guys! I am so excited to introduce Mia for our Gamer Famelle Interview today. I have been such a huge fan of hers ( I devour her blog) and I honestly can't believe she said yes! I'm movin up ya'll. If you don't know, She's a blogger and Cosplayer from Texas and run Superheroesque. Read on, to find dropped knowledge.

Sony or Nintendo for your mobile gaming?
Nintendo all the way! I'm not big into action or fps games, and Nintendo has a lot of family-friendly I.P.'s that I really enjoy.

What do you like to see in your games? What about them makes that game your favorite?
I like games that relax me, rather than stress me out. For some reason, I find most games really stressful! I don't like anything that is super time sesitive or reactionary because of that. I'd rather play a game like Animal Crossing or Mario Party -- Fun, Colorful and Chill!

Do you have a gaming role model? If so, who and why?
One of my favorite inspirations in general is Felicia Day, because all her successes have come from going against the grain. Her show, The Guild, focuses on things from her real life, like being socially awkward and playing MMOs to escape reality. She's lso an incredible businesswomand and has managed to make herself into a brand that people relate to -- a huge inspiration to me, for sure!

Name your top five games.
This is tough, but I love Animal Crossing: New Leaf, The Sims, Portal, Left4Dead 2 and Pokemon.

If you had to live in a game's environment, which would you choose?
Can I just answer Animal Crossing for all these questions? Haha. But really, I love Animal Crossing. I'd love it if the background music was really present in my everyday life!

Are you a fan of Pokemon? If so, what are a couple of your favorites?
Absolutely! Some of my faves are Flaafy (do androids dream of electric sheep?) Drifloon and Sylveon.

Do you get a lot of flack for being a female gamer? Have you ever had an harrassment issues online, blogging, vlogging, gaming or otherwise?
I don't usually identify myself as a gamer online -- I'm more of a geek of all trades rather than any single geek hobby. I think that's helped me avoid a lot of flack for being a lady gamer. I will say that I've had a few negative comments to me cosplaying from a video game.

If someone was new to gaming, and you wanted to get them hooked, which game would you recommend?
I think it depends on what they like in media. Are they about character development, story, action? Are they looking for excitement or relaxation? If they just want an addictive game to play during downtime, I'd say Animal Crossing: New Leaf. If they are story-driven, I'd suggest any of the Telltale games, especially if they are already into the property (i.e. Game of Thrones fans should try the Telltale Game of Thrones game!)

What would you tell parents, who don't let their children play video games?
I think people who are against children playing video games don't see games as just another form of media. Research has shown that gaming helps with motor skills and making quick dcisions. I think it can be really valuable! If the concern is the content of the games, then make sure that the games your child is playing are education in some way. This doesn't mean they have to play a game about grammar, but almost every non-fps game has some kind of puzzle element.
If you were going to get a gaming tattoo, what would you get and what's the significance for you?
I think if I got a gaming-related tattoo, it'd probably be from Animal Crossing, since that's been my favorite game for years. To me, Animal Crossing represents the kind of fantasy life I'd love to have -- all the neighbors know each other, and the goals are things that are attainable in real life, like building and decorating a house you love, helping others and building friendships. I'd probably get one of the symbols from the game.

When you aren't gaming, what are some of your other time-passing hobbies?
I love all kinds of geeky media -- right now I'm really into TV shows (Game of Thrones and American Horror Story are my current faves) and comic books (Bitch Planet and Rat Queens). I also love creating stuff online -- I blog, recently started podcasting and I'm about to start working on my Youtube channel more!

Do you enjoy games, even when there aren't any playable female characters?
I have before, but I think it's become a bigger thing for me now. One of my favorite games was Team Fortress 2 and there are only male characters and while I didn't enjoy that, it didn't bother me. Now, I think it's a bigger factor in whether or not I even play a game. There are few and fewer excuses for not including female characters, even if they aren't playable,

Make sure you visit Mia and show her some love on her twitter and Instagram !

Five Fandom Friday: Comic Characters that deserve T.V./ Films

June 5, 2015

Hi Gang!
This topic is going to be so easy for me! I am forever talking about characters that I wish I could see on the big screen, and with all the commotion of people wanting more representation, my choices are going to be all over the map.

#1 Misty Knight: She is my first choice. If anyone asked me this, she's the first one to pop into my head. Misty Knight is the first black heroine. She premieres before Storm, and is known for her work with Iron Fist and Luke Cage, as a mercenary for hire. I'd rather have a movie than a television show, because then it could be all about her.  We could get an origin story, and one of her first battles and maybe some type of collaboration at the end that could lead to another movie for another character, like Valkyrie, that could be cool.

#2 Storm: Yes, she was in the X-men movies, but the portrayal was so terrible, that honestly, I don't really count those! I'd love a movie based off her solo run by Greg Pak, I just figured that her run would be awesome! The story was a favorite of mine and I would love to see it brought to life on the big screen. Maybe she could even team up with Misty Knight and give all of her fans everything they were missing.

#3 Batgirl: I'd love to see a movie about Barbara Gordon. As much as I love new Batgirl and I do, but for the movie I would love to see her transformation from Batgirl to Oracle and would love to the see the relationship between Dick and Barbara blossom on the big screen, to transform from sidekicks to their own heroes would be great. Or a television show where she solves mysteries and beats her father to the punch. That would be awesome.

#4  Wonder Woman: I'd be cool with a television show that explores her origin story and OTHER AMAZONS ON THE ISLAND! Like Nubia, A duo/team up for those two ladies would be crazy awesome. Kind of like a mystery solving show, I think that would be really neat.

#5 Gotham Academy: The story is just so unique and the art is exquisite! I would absolutely love to see a Gotham Academy Television series! Mystery solving, multiple characters of Color, Ghosts, and something about Gotham that doesn't center/revolve around Batman would be awesome. I like Batman as much as the next person, but he really isn't the only hero out there. This tv show would prove that, and since the story features villains more, you could have more indepth looks into their character and find out what makes them tick.

What are some Characters you'd like to see on the Big Screen? Lets talk about it on Twitter!!!

Nerd Out: The Dream Crochet Shoppe

June 1, 2015

Hi Gang!
I was able to touch base with the lovely Ashlee and she agreed to an interview! I've been reading her blog since it's inception and her shop is full of beautiful hand crafted pieces, I just had to share her with you guys!

- Tell us a little bit about yourself and your shop.
I am Ashlee Elle and I have a shoppe which is called The Dream Crochet Shoppe. It is where I create originally designed handmade crochet items from scarves, to hats,to graphic sweaters and even dresses! I started crocheting a little bit before I attended College. Crocheting entirely became such a relaxing form of art where I found that I could create whatever I truly imagine. At first, I would solely create handmade items for friends and family members as gifts for special life events as well as holidays. Though as the years progressed, I swiftly discovered a beautiful community online where others held the same love as well as admiration for Crocheting as I hold to this day. From that point, I started sharing my work online within my blogs and it's been quite an educating and joyous experience, I absolutely love every bit of creating.

Whose your favorite Comic Book Hero?
My favorite Comic Book Here would have to be the one and only, Batman. Hands down. A close second is Aquaman though my love for Harley Quinn (who is a Villain) trumps both heroes!

- What are some of your go to places/things when you have a creative block?
Some of the places I like to go when I have a creative block would be going for nature walks, reading books that inspire, listening to a handful of my favorite bands as well as perusing local thrift/vintage stores for garment inspiration. Also, coffee helps a lot too! All of those pieces truly help the ingredients of solving a creative block for me and I'm quite thankful for all forms of art that can help produce as well as inspire.

What's your advice for people who want to learn to crochet?
The best advice I could offer for those who want to learn how to crochet would be to Experiment. Create what you would like to see, what you would like to wear, there are no rules to creativity, you have the all of the power in your hook. Just go for it!  Also, Youtube tutorials are a lifesaver for starting out!

What's one thing about you/ your products that you would like people to know?
One thing I would like others to know, is that I have a strong love for this art form, crocheting is a passion of mine and I truly hope it reaches, that it inspires those who love to create as well. I truly hope that passion, that emotion is perceived throughout each item and project that I put out.

- What's your design process for a finished garment?
The design process starts with a small seed of inspiration, which grows to my book sketches of the particular design, then I gather the materials necessary and go to work! A lot of the time, my designs are purely experimental so I'm not entirely sure how the garment will come out, but its such an adventure that I favor it more than actually planning out a specific design. The excitement of finishing a garment is quite overwhelming to be honest, the notion that this finished product that I created with my own two hands, is now an item that I can wear or someone else can create, is simply astounding.

- If you could create anything without having to worry about copyright infringement, what would it be and why?
If I could create anything without copyright infringement, I would entirely recreate Harley Quinn's exact costume from Batman: The Animated Series and utilize the garment for Cosplay!

- What are some of the things you Nerd Out about?
Some of the things I nerd out about would be : Detective Comics (DC Girl) I love reading Graphic Novels, Secret Six and Aquaman are at the top of the list, All things fantasy driven, Willow (my favorite movie ever by Lucas himself) Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Star Wars, Hunger Games, Harry Potter Game of Thrones and just about every game ever made on Nintendo 64 (especially Mario Kart 64!)
